Abstract

885,006. Agglutinated fibrous materials; paper with localised binders. GRISWOLD, H. W., and DRELICH, A. H. Jan. 28, 1959 [Jan. 28, 1958], No. 3106/59. Classes 96 and 140. A bonded fibrous non-woven textile fabric comprises a web of fibres and a non-migratory binder distributed throughout the web in a pattern of spaced binder segments bonding together the fibres passing through the said segments which latter are diffused substantially completely through the fabric from one surface thereof to the other surface to form soft and flexible individually distinct open networks of bonded fibres, the binder being distributed throughout the binder segments in an amount of from 13 to 35% by weight based on the weight of the fibres in the binder segments. As shown (Fig. 1), a carded non-woven textile fabric 10 comprises sinuous binder segments 12 extending across the width of the fabric. Alternatively, the binder pattern may be in the form of squares, spots, continuous or broken lines. A fibrous non-woven web W (Fig. 11) is impregnated with an aqueous liquid from a tank 102 as it passes through the nip of rolls 100 and 101 and is printed with a binding agent such as viscose, picked up from bath 105 by pick-up roll 106, by applicator roll 107 which is engraved or etched to provide depressions for rotogravure printing of the binding agent on the web W. The treated web W then passes through any other necessary treating devices 110, e.g. for regenerating the viscose, through oven 120 and is wound up on roll 130. Specified fibres are cotton, wool, flax, hemp, rayon, regenerated cellulose, nylon, cellulose acetate, acrylic compounds and vinyl compounds. A specified binder is regenerated cellulose. The webs may be formed by carding, air-laying or water-laying. Examples disclose the application by rotogravure methods of a cellulose xanthate binder to webs made by carding, air-deposition or fluid-deposition and comprising fibres of viscose rayon, viscose rayon and cotton mixed, or wool. Specifications 468,529, 674,779, 677,928, 744,839, 745,065 and 816,673 are referred to.
