Abstract

1367944 Nonwoven fabrics JOHNSON & JOHNSON 16 Nov 1971 53135/71 Headings D1R and D2B In a method of making an nonwoven fabric which comprises forming a web of fibres and subsequently rearranging the fibres by application of jets of fluid, the fibres are treated with a swelling agent in the form of an organic liquid or solution or an aqueous solution either prior to rearrangement or are rearranged using jets containing the swelling agent. The web may be an air-laid, carded, or wet-formed web. The fibres may be natural, e.g. cellulosic, wool, silk or synthetic, e.g. rayon, cellulose ester, polyamide (nylon 6, 6/6, 6/10, 10, 11) polyester, acrylic, modacrylic, or polyolefin (polyethylene, polypropylene). Many examples of suitable swelling agents for various fibres are given. In typical examples, a carded web of cotton and rayon fibres is treated with an aqueous solution of NaOH and the fibres of the treated web are rearranged by jets of water (Example I), and a wet-formed web of rayon fibres is treated with an aqueous solution of NaOH and rearranged by jets of water (Example, XX). An aqueous emulsion or dispersion of a binder resin may be applied to the webs treated with the swelling agent to bond the fibres.
