Abstract

915,682. Bonded fibre fabrics; laminates. MOBGENSTERN, D. Feb. 5, 1959 [Aug. 4. 1958], No. 4135/59. Class 140. A needled fabric is characterized by having at least one layer of adhesively-bonded fibres interiorly thereof and individual fibres extending from one side of the said layer to the other side through needle perforations in the said layer. The fabric may be made by forming a fleece of fibres, coating a surface thereof with an adhesive binder to form a thin layer of bonded fibres, drying the said surface and then needling the unbonded fibre fleece through the layer of dried adhesive binder. A single needling operation on each side may be carried out. Specified fibres are cattle hair, horse hair, wool, cotton, linen, palma, cocoa, asbestos, glass, metal, rayon, acetate, nylon. Specified binders are natural or synthetic rubber, vinyl resins, isocyanate resins, polyamides, polyacrylates. The fleece may be formed by airdeposition, carding or garnetting. The binder may be applied by spraying. As shown (Fig. 1), a fibre fleece 7 has one surface 6 spray coated with binder and dried. Fig. 2 shows the same fleece after needling, whereby individual fibres 8 have been forced through the bonded layer 6 causing them to protrude on the upper side of layer 6 and in effect form a new outermost surface layer 9 binding the existence of adhesive bonded layer 6 from visual discernment. Both surfaces of the fleece may be coated before needling. In Fig. 4 two layers of fleece 17, 17<SP>1</SP>, each having an adhesive coated outer layer 6, 6<SP>1</SP> are placed with the latter layers face to face, dried to set the adhesive and then needled in both directions whereby fibres 8 from layer 17 are forced into layer 17<SP>1</SP> and fibres 8 from layer 17<SP>1</SP> are forced into layer 17, thereby thoroughly interlocking the layers into an integral needled fabric. The outer surfaces of the combined layers may be lightly coated with adhesive to bind loose fibres. Examples disclose the carrying out of the invention with fleeces of cotton, nylon, wool, wool and nylon, cotton and nylon, acetate and nylon fibres; and with binders consisting of polyvinyl chloride, acrylic resin and casein, nitrile rubber, polyamide resin, nitrile rubber and melamine formaldehyde polytmethane compound.
