790,118. Wadding; opening fibres. HOWARD, Ltd., H. A., and HOWARD. H. A. Oct. 20, 1955 [Oct. 28. 1954], No. 31121/54. Classes 120(1) and 142(4) Upholstery fibre has its density reduced by two sets of parallel needles or combs, which penetrate a layer of the fibre perpendicularly, move apart sideways whilst remaining parallel and within the layer, and then withdraw from the layer. In the embodiment described, the fibre is fed through the machine by moving the needles in the direction of feed, one set of needles moving further than the other to maintain the density-reducing action. The fibre 11, which may be hair, and may be coated with rubber or plasticized polyvinyl chloride, passes between plates 9, 10 and needles 14, 15 are moved by cams 30 to penetrate the fibre. The needles are mounted on bars 16 carried by beams 17, and further cams 25 engage arms 24 and move the beams laterally to feed the fibres to the right. The upper needles move approximately twice as far laterally as the lower needles. The cams 25 are designed so that the beams 17 are moved quickly to the right and are returned more slowly. The needles may have barbs thereon pointing either up or down. The oams for the upper needles are driven by chain and sprocket 'gearing from the shaft 8 carrying the lower cams. The shaft 8 is driven through a coupling by a driving shaft carrying a pulley for a V-belt drive.
