Class 142(4) Pile material 7, which may be wool, is pleated by cam operated arms 26 and retained between parallel plates 8, 9 by cam operated retainers 31, a viscous polymerizable monomer which may be vinylchloride is applied from a reservoir 10 to the upper ends of the loops which then pass beneath infra-red lamps 20, the fabric thus formed is reversed and the other end of the loops secured with the monomer, and the fabric is finally cut centrally to produce two pile fabrics. A fabric with a shorter pile can be obtained by securing the cut ends of the fabrics with more monomer and cutting that fabric centrally to produce two fabrics. This process can be performed repeatedly. The density of the loops can be varied by altering the speed of a conveyer belt 14, with respect to the feed of delivery rolls for the pile material.
