Abstract
830,061. Abrasive tools. SORENSEN, P. L. B., and KRISTIANSEN, N. P. Aug. 13, 1958 [Aug. 24, 1957], No. 25968/58. Class 60. A method of manufacturing a grinding surface, such as an endless grinding belt, comprises shaping strands 2 of metal wool into preferably uniform loops 3 which are glued, rubber-cemented, stitched or otherwise fastened to a base, such as a belt or plate 1. The strands are cut in the main direction of the fibres from a batch of metal wool with a toothless saw and spun right or left-handed and wound into loops on a circle of pins, one loop being wound on each pin consecutively around the circle and repeated until the piles of loops on the pins correspond to the desired width of the grinding surface. The assembly is glued, pasted or rubber-cemented along the innermost side 6 of the loops against the base 1, such as an endless woven hessian belt. The pins are then removed from the loops and the strands further secured to the belt by stitches 5. A cord, which may be of natural or synthetic material or strands of metal wool, may be pulled through the openings of the loops in each pile and stitched or otherwise fastened to the belt. In use, the rows of loops are approximately at right angles to the direction of movement of the grinding surface.
