A polishing roll for the surface treatment of cutlery comprises plaited or twisted sisal cords 1 which are sewn into a fabric cover 2 to form segments 3, the segments being aligned adjacent one another in one or more rows and fixed to a core 4. The fabric may be cotton or an abrading cloth cut so that the warp and weft threads run obliquely to the sisal cords, and the fabric and cords are sewn together with zig-zag seams (5, Fig. 2) having chain-type stitches to permit a degree of elasticity in the segments. Each sisal cord may consist of six or eight strands twisted or plaited and be of round or square section; in the latter case, four square cords may be combined to form a segmental block. The segments may include layers of abrasive material and the fabric may be impregnated with an abrasive substance. The segments may be round and consist of groups of cords plaited circularly.
