Abstract

1,247,373. Laminates. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 18 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967], No. 49623/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] An open mat of crinkled continuous thermoplastic filaments which are welded together, has at least a portion of one surface flattened and containing a higher density of filament than does the interior of the mat. The mat is made by extruding a bundle of the filaments 11 on to a contact surface, e.g. drum 12, and in glancing contact therewith, and advancing the filaments into a quench bath 13 at a speed substantially less than the extrusion speed. The ratio of these speeds can be between 2 and 7. The drum can carry mat-advancing pins 16 and may be oscillated. The drum can be smooth or have a patterned surface. Alternatively a stationary collecting plate can be used. This plate can be flat, or annular so as to form a rod having a smooth surface and low-density interior. Both surfaces of the mat can be flattened. The filaments may have a diameter of 5-125 mils and may be formed of polycarbonate, polyalkylene, polyester, polyamide, ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer or polyvinyl chloride (which may be coloured white). The formed mat can be treated with solutions or suspensions of binder, e.g. vinyl plastisol, or coating agents, or by dyeing or metallizing the filaments, or by the addition of abrasive grains, metal flakes, fibrous flock or ground cork, or by embossing, skinning, shearing or partial fusion. Two or more of the mats can be bonded side-by-side or face-to-face. The mat can be bonded to a plastic film or screen, or plasticized vinyl resin-coated glass cloth, which is introduced at the contact surface.
