Abstract

1,141,304. Non-woven fabrics; paper. HERCULES Inc. 28 April, 1966 [18 May, 1965], No. 18674/66. Headings D1R and D2B. A bonded non-woven fabric is made of synthetic, organic, thermoplastic, staple fibres produced from melt-spun filaments, and has intermittent light- and dark-coloured areas; the thermoplastic fibres in the dark-coloured areas are bonded together and to at least some of the fibres in the light-coloured areas, but the majority of the fibres in the light-coloured areas are unbonded. -The fabric may be made by blending dark- and light-coloured fibres, forming them into a web, exposing the web to radiant heat so that the fibres in the darkcoloured areas melt preferentially, and then cooling the web to solidify them. Alternatively, fibres all of the same colour may be formed into a web, which is then printed with a pattern of light and dark areas and exposed to radiant heat. The synthetic fibres may be of polypropylene, polyethylene, poly(4-methylpentene- 1), polyamides, poly-(ethylene terephthalate), acrylic polymers, poly(vinyl chloride), poly (vinylidene chloride) or poly(vinyl acetate), and may be molecularly oriented by drawing, and crimped. The fabric may be wholly or synthetic fibres, or may be of a blend of natural and synthetic fibres. The webs may be random or oriented, and may be made by a wet or a dry process, e.g. carding.
