Abstract

1,209,523. Reinforced fabric laminate. HERCULES Inc. 18 Jan., 1968 [23 Jan., 1967], No. 2889/68. Heading B5N. An air-pervious reinforced non-woven fabric is made by heating a non-woven web in close contact with a thermoplastic net material comprising regularly spaced intersections connected by thermoplastic strands, at a temperature sufficiently high to melt said thermoplastic net material and cause the strands to draw back towards the intersections making regularly spaced spots of melted thermoplastic material which bond the fibres of the non- woven fabric when the melt cools. The non- woven fabric may comprise fibres or continuous filaments, e.g. fibres of polypropylene, cotton, wool, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, polycaprolactam, acrylates, vinyls, polyesters or viscose rayon, and may be a mixture of wool and polyamide fibres. The thermoplastic net material may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, which may be stereoregular, polyesters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, or copolymers of ethylene with propylene, vinyl acetate or methyl acrylate. The net material may be woven, or a perforated sheet, or two perpendicular sets of parallel strands bonded at their cross-overs, or a plurality of uniformly spaced solid thick masses joined by oriented strands or threads, e.g. as shown in Fig. 9. The fabric may comprise a non-woven web with the net material on one or both surfaces, or two non-woven webs with the net material between them, or layers of the non-woven web and the net material arranged alternately. The layers may be united by heating them in a platen press, or passing them between heated nip rollers, or passing them taut over a large heated roller possibly pressing them against such roller by a belt. Alternatively the layers are heated by hot air or steam whilst they are held between metal screens, or passed over a perforated or screen drum, e.g. using a screen belt. The reinforced fabrics may be used as filter cloths, shades for crops, backing fabrics for tufted structures or disposable fabrics, e.g. surgical dressings, bed sheets, pillow coverings or surgical gowns.
