Abstract
1,083,008. Making composite filaments. KANEGAFUCHI BOSEKI KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Dec. 7, 1964 [Dec. 7, 1963], No. 49671/64. Heading B5B. Composite filaments are made by the conjugate spinning of two kinds of linear synthetic polymer in such a way that the resulting composite filament has a cross-section in which one of the two components surrounds the other in a manner free from eccentricity, and by thereafter mechanically deforming the composite filament in such a manner that the two components thereof assume an eccentric relationship to each other. The mechanical deformation may be effected by edge crimping the filament by causing it to travel over and in contact with a heated sharp knife edge or an edge having a minute radius of curvature, or by compressing the filament by causing it to travel through the nip of a pair of heated rolls, a pair of heated mutually engaging gear-wheels or through the nip of a pair of heated rolls, one of which has a plain peripheral surface and the other has an indented peripheral surface. The polymers may be two kinds of nylon 6 differing in intrinsic viscosity as determined by measurements carried out at 30‹ C. in solutions of the polymer in meta-cresol. The conjugate filament may be spun in such a manner that the polymer of lower intrinsic viscosity constitutes the outer component. The conjugate filament thus formed may be edge crimped over a knife edge heated to 120‹ C. One of the polymers may be a nylon 6 and the other may be a polymer formed by reacting undecamethylene diamine terephthalate with 8-caprolactam or may be a polymer formed by reacting the adipate of metaxyliden with its acetate. The composite filament may be produced by the conjugate spinning of two different polyesters.
