CABDING-MACHINE CONDENSER.

Condensers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent interference between ropings passing from the ring dotter to the roping spools of a carding-machine condenser, the tondensed ropings being wound on said spo ls, which are mounted in the usual winding frame at one end of the machine and driven as usual.
The roping stretches passing from the ring dofi'er to the winding rolls are in close proximity to each other. The surface of each roping usually carries laterally projecting fibers, not incorporated in the condensed body of the roping and having free outer ends. The said stretches are so close together that fibers projecting from one stretch are liable to interfere or be entangled with fibers projecting from the adja cent stretch or stretches, this interference being a serious objection, because it renders necessary constant inspection of the stretches on their way to the spools, and the separation of entangled fibers between adjacent stretches. If this separation is not effected before the ropings are wound on the spools, the interference causes imperfections in the interfering ropings, when they are subsequently separated.
I attain the object of the invention by providing shearing rolls, as hereinafter described, adapted to trim projecting fibers from opposite sides of the roping stretches before they reach the winding spools, so that fibers on any stretch are prevented from interfering with fibers on the adjacent stretch or, stretches.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation, showing somewhat conventionally the ring and two of the roping spools of a well known t e of cardingmachine condenser, and caring rolls roping stretches passing between the ring doffer and the windin rolls.

Figures 5 and 6 are magnified cross sectional views of two adjacent roping stretches, Fi re 5 showing said stretches before, and igure 6 after, the trimming operation.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
Figures 1 and 2 show the ring dofi'er 12, two of the winding spools 13, and two pairs of rubbing aprons 24, interposed between the ring doifer and the rolls, these elementsbeing so well known in carding-machine condensers that further description thereof, and a disclosure of the means for operating the same are not necessary.
- In carrying out my invention it interpose at any suitable point between the ring dofier and the winding spools a pair of shearing rolls, one above the other, and fixed to shafts 14, 14:, which are jourhaled in fixed bearings (not shown) on the usual frame of the machine. Each roll includes a cylindrical body portion 15 and a plurality of spaced apart annular shearing knives 16.
Said knives may be integral with the body portions 15, and formed by peripherally grooving a cylindrical metal body, to form the knives and annular grooves or spaces 17 therebetween. The knives of each roll enter the annular spaces 17 between the knives of th other roll. The intersection of the periphery and the sides of each knife form' two annular shearing edges on each knife, the edges of the knives on one roll being in shearing contact with those of the knives on the other roll.
The shearing rolls are arranged so that stretches 18 of ropings on the way from the ring dofi'er to the spools 13, pm between the rolls, as shown byFigures 3 and 4.
Loose fibers projecting from the surfaces of the stretches 18, as shown conventionally by Figure 5, are trimmed from opposite sides of the stretches, as indicated by Figure 6, so that interference between adjacent stretches is prevented. V
i prefer to locate the shearing rolls between the two pairs of aprons 24, as shown by Figures 1 and 2, said aprons being spaced apart to permit the interposition of the shearing rolls between one pair and the other. The shearing rolls are driven simultaneously in opposite directions, by any suitable means, including, in this instance, a gear 20 (Figure 1) fixed to the shaft which drives one of the aprons .24, a gear 21 fixed to the shaft of the lower shearing roll and meshing with the gear 20, and a gear 22 fixed to the shaft of the upper shearing roll and meshing with.v the gear 21. The gear 20 may be driven by a larger gear 23, which is driven in any suitable Way by the power of the machine.
I claim:
In a carding-machine condenser which inchides a ring dofier, roping spools spaced therefrom, to wind ropings comingfrom the ring dofier; means for trimming opposite sides of the said ropings, said means com prising a pair of shearing rolls arranged in the path of the ropings between the ring dofier and the roping spools, and means'tor rotating said rolls simultaneously in opposite directions, each roll including spaced at apart annular shearing knives entering an nular spaces between the knives of the other roll.
