M ATTORNEYS- patented Mar. 12, 1935 GEAR MOUNTING Albert Brouwer, Whitinsville, Mass, assignor to Whitin Machine Works, Whitinsville, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application May 17, 1933, Serial No. 671,552
1 Claim.
belts or aprons.
It is the object of my invention to provide an improved construction of such geared drawing rolls, by the use of which construction marked economy in manufacture is attained. A fur,- ther object is to provide an improved method of manufacturing and assembling such rolls.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which i Fig. 1 is a plan view of a set of drawing rolls of a long-draft spinning machine;
Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation, taken along the line 22 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of a portion of a geared drawing roll beforethe gear is mounted thereon;
Fig. 4 is a front view of a gear;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof, looking in the direction of the arrow 5 in Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a plan view, partly in section, showing the method of assembling the gear and roll.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, I have shown a series of drawing rolls adapted for use in a longdraft spinning machine and comprising lower driven rolls 10, 11, 12 and 13 and upper rolls 14, 15, 16 and 17.
The upper rolls 14, 16 and 17 simply rest on the lower rolls 10, 12 and 13 and are frictionall rotated thereby in the usual manner.
The rolls 11 and are connected by gears 20 and 21 so that the upper roll 15 is positively driven from the lower roll. These rolls 11 and 15 operate long-draft aprons 22 which are guided by rolls 23 in side frame members 24 in the usual manner.
All of the parts thus far described are in general of the usual type and my invention relates entirely to the construction and assembly of the gears 20 and 21 with the rolls 11 and 15 respectively.
The details of construction and method of assembly are best shown in Figs. 3 to 6 and will be described with reference to the roll 15 and gear 21, it being understood that the description applies without change to the construction of the gear 20 and lower roll 11.
Referring to Figs. 3 to 6, the roll 15 is provided with a connecting portion having a pair of parallel annular flanges 31 spaced apart to receive the gear 21. The gear 21 is formed as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, with segmental side flanges 32 separated by recesses 33. Each gear is also provided with diametrically opposed slots 34 and is broken into two separate pieces along the line of these slots after manufacture thereof and after the forming of the teeth thereon.
The two parts of each gear are kept carefully in associated pairs and are later assembled between the flanges 31 of a selected drawing roll, after which a retaining ring (Fig. 6) is forced over the two parts of the gear to hold the parts firmly in assembled relation.
The roll 15 is then mounted in suitable bearingsand positively rotated, while at the same time a pair of flanging or swedging wheels 41 are forced against the edges of the flanges31.
The rolling action of the wheels 41 on the flanges-31 forces the edges of the flanges inward over the segmental flanges 32 as clearly shown in Fig. 6, thereby firmly retaining the gear 21 in assembled position between the flanges 31.
During the flanging operation, portions of the stock of the flanges 31 are also forced into the recesses 33 and thereafter prevent relative angular movement of the gear 21 on the roll 15.
After the gear and roll are thus assembled, the ring 40 is removed and the complete geared drawing roll appears as shown in'Figs. 1 and 2.
My improved geared roll may thus be manufactured at much less cost than the rolls previously used which have been machined from solid pieces of steel which were necessarily of the full diameter of the gear and required the removal of a very large amount of stock in the manufacture thereof.
Having thus described my invention and the, advantages thereof, I do not wish to'be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but what I claim is:
A geared drawing roll comprising a roll having a pair of spaced parallel annular flanges integral therewith, and a two-part annular gear mounted between said flanges, said gear having side portions of less diameter than said annular flanges and said annular flanges being displaced toward each other and overlying said side portions, said side portions having recesses therein and said annular flanges having portions of stock displaced into said recesses to prevent relative rotation. V
ALBERT BROUWER.
