558,297. Crimping filaments and threads. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 26, 1942 No. 8784. Convention date, June 27, 1941. [Class 120 (iii)] Continuous untwisted filaments or threads are crimped by passing them over a deforming edge while under tension with a substantial charge in the direction of the thread in its passage over the edge and subsequently relaxing the thread ; the crimped thread may be cut into short lengths and may comprise a "nylon" and a slightly twisted yarn e.g. one with no more than two per inch may be used to obtain an intermittent rather than a continuous crimp. As shown an untwisted continuous thread or filament 2 e.g. of nylon, is taken by rollers 5 from a supply bobbin 1, or from the rollers used in cold drawing the initially-formed filament, is passed around a tension device 3 and then around the edge of a member 4 where the thread has a change in direction of 90 degrees ; after passing the rollers 5, the relaxed and crimped thread is cut by a device 6 into staples of any desired length or the thread may be cut before it is relaxed. The relaxed thread may be wound up on a bobbin or other collecting device, the crimped thread may be twisted while still under tension, may be abraded to cause a random breakage of the filaments of the thread, and the crimps may be set by a steaming or other process. The thread may be passed around the edges of a rectangular member to give a change in direction of 170 degrees or a change of 45 degrees may be given by passing it around a right-angled edge.
