In a method of treating yarn to impart stretch/ bulk properties, (a) latent crimp is intermittently introduced into a multifilament, continuous filament thermoplastic yarn as it is linearly progressed and (b) such crimp is subsequently developed e.g. by continuously overfeeding the yarn, the steps (a) and (b) constituting a single continuous process. The latent crimp may alternate with zero latent crimp or with a lesser degree of latent crimp in which latter case a crimping apparatus may comprise two different yarn engaging members selectively engageable with the yarn to impart different degrees of crimp thereto. In the apparatus shown, yarn Y is fed from a supply bobbin 11, through guides 13, over a larger diameter portion 14a of a feed roll assembly 14, to a crimper 15 wherein yarn passes in one or more wraps around portion 17a of a rotatably driven grooved heater roll 17, over the edge 21a of a blade 21 and then over a driven roll 23, whereby it acquires some patent crimp and a larger latent crimp. As the yarn passes through the crimper, it is periodically moved at regular or random intervals into and out of contact with the edge 21a by an arm 29 connected to the reciprocable armature 31a of a solenoid 31 which is actuated by an intermittent electrical signal generator 33. The latent crimp is developed by return passage of the yarn around a smaller diameter portion 14b of assembly 14 and then around portion 17b of roll 17, before the treated yarn is fed to take-up mechanism 27.
