Abstract
1311350 Edge and friction crimped yarns ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 31 Dec 1970 [16 Jan 1970] 62023/70 Headings D1F and D1W A process for texturizing thermoplastics filaments or yarn comprises feeding the yarn under tension in sliding frictional engagement over a crimping element while the element is being advanced in the direction of longitudinal movement of the yarn, relative movement between the yarn and the element being maintained. In a preferred embodiment, yarn 12 is taken from a supply 11, passed through a tension regulator 13 and fed to a crimping element 10. The crimping element 10 comprises a frame having end plates 29 between which are mounted first and second guide rollers 15 and 16 and a crimping blade 24 having a knife edge 21. The crimping blade is adjustable radially of the end plates 29 which are caused to rotate in the direction of yarn travel at a different speed to the yarn. The yarn passes round the rollers 15 and 16 and over the edge 21 of the blade 24. The tension in the yarn leaving the edge is increased relative to the tension in the yarn approaching the edge, and if it is desired to pass the yarn several times round the rollers and over the edge, the yarn may be passed round a tension reducing godet roll 51 and separator roll 50 between the successive passes. The crimped yarn is then wound at 52. The yarn produced has a helical crimp which is preferably relaxed by steam treatment. Depending on the relative speeds of the crimping element 10 and the yarn, the yarn produced may be intermittently crimped or completely crimped along its length. A heater 25 may be positioned adjacent the blade 24 to maintain the yarn at the desired temperature. In an alternative embodiment, the crimping element comprises a roller having a helical blade on its external surface: One or more of these crimping elements may be arranged sequentially depending on the effect to be achieved in the yarn. In another embodiment, the crimping element comprises a blade and contiguous heater mounted on a frame which performs a planetary motion around a driven godet roll, the yarn being passed a number of times around the godet roll and the crimping element.
