Abstract

831,343. Crimping yarns; thread guides. TEXTURA A.G Dec. 27. 1956 [Dec. 30. 1955], No. 39266/56. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) In a process of compression-crimping in which individually-spaced continuous filament yarns are continuously fed by a pair of counter-rotating members into a container, entanglement of yarns is prevented by an electrostatic field generated adjacent the members. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a guide bar 10 maintains yarns 11 in separate and parallel relation as they pass through an adjustable, perforated guide bar 12 and a dividing device 38 of crimping apparatus 15: relatively adjustable, spring-loaded rollers 28 and 29, driven from a motor 32 through belt 33, pulleys 25 and 34, gears 36, 36<SP>1</SP>, 35, 35<SP>1</SP>, feed the yarns into a housing 44 wherein the yarns are crimped and emerge to descend, as a web in relaxed condition, into a box 49 which is transferred to an oven 51 for heat-setting the crimped material e.g. by use of steam, infra-red rays, heating coils, ultrasonic or high frequency means, for periods up to three hours and temperatures up to 500‹F. and pressure (steam) up to 50 lbs. sq. inch. The yarns are then separated from the web and wound singly or as multiplies in preparation for twisting, winding and/or weaving or 'Knitting. Electrostatic charge eliminators 45, 46, 47, insulated from the apparatus framework, each comprise a straight bar of circular cross-section having a series of projections thereon and are connected to a source of electricity so that they are charged to dispel electrostatic charge tending to develop on the yarns as a result of their frictional contact with parts of the apparatus. As shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the divider 38 comprises side and end members 39, 40, and 41, 41a supporting metal strips 42 defining slots 43 through which the yarns pass and are segregated, if necessary, by filler plates 43a. Divider 38 may be replaced by a unit consisting of plates extending over roller 28 or 29 and comprising half the shape shown in Fig. 5.
