Abstract

705,580. Crimping yarns and filaments. ROSENSTEIN, N., and ROSENSTEIN, A. J. Aug. 24, 1950 [May 31, 1950], No. 20985/50. Class 120(3) An assembly of continuous filaments or continuous-filament yarns in "tow" or "rope" form are crimped by conveying them between limp sheathing members, such as endless bands, whilst passing through the crimping means, the sheathing members parting from the yarns after crimping and the crimped yarns being collected in a relaxed condition. As shown, Fig. 2, a number of laterally-spaced continuous filament yarns 11 are cross-leased at 10 and drawn together through a guide 17 to form a "rope" 16 which passes over a roller 23, through a tubular guide 38 and between driven pressure rollers 26, 27 which force it in crimped or folded condition into a housing 47. One side 51 of the housing is pivoted at 52 and forms a door which is pressed towards the opposite side 48 by a weighted lever 58, Fig. 3; when the housing is filled with crimped and compressed rope, door 51 yields to permit the rope to drop in a relaxed, limp, crimped condition into a collecting box 64. Cushion aprons 43, 44 of continuous filament knitted or. woven webbing are fed one on either side of the rope between rollers 26, 27 and through housing 47 to protect the yarns from the crushing action of the rollers and to form rounded bends or crimps in the yarns; alternatively the pairs of aprons or bands may be so disposed in passing between rollers 26, 27 as to provide a channel therebetween for the passage of the rope which becomes sharply crimped. The relaxed, crimped rope in container 64 is subsequently set in the crimped condition by the application of heat, pressure and moisture, a temperature of 160‹F to 350‹F being used according to the material, which may be nylon, glass, polyethylene terephthalate, or "Orlon," "Savan" or "Dynel" (Registered Trade Marks). The individual yarns in the rope are then separated and wound on to bobbins. A tow of continuous synthetic filaments may be crimped in place of the rope yarns described, the leasing step being omitted. [GB705580A]
