Abstract

984,922. Crimping fibres. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. Jan. 10,1964 [Feb. 2,1963], No. 4354/63. Heading D1F. In a process for drawing i.e. molecularly orienting, and permanently crimping or corrugating synthetic polymer filaments e.g. a multifilament yarn, the filaments are heated and pulled under tension to pass once only between means e.g. intermeshing toothed-wheel members or corrugated bands, causing the filaments to follow a sharply zig-zag path and having a component of motion in the mean direction of travel of the filaments at the point of contact therewith. The filaments may be of a polyamide, polyester or polypropylene, and of circular, triangular or trilobal cross-section. As shown, filaments (in the form of one or more yarns Y 1 ) withdrawn over one end of a package 1 through a guide 3 by nip feed rolls 5, 7, are drawn in the span between rolls 5, 7, and draw roll 9 (with separator roll 11) wherein they are wrapped around, and their temperature raised to 140-160‹C. by, an electrically heated snubbing pin 13 and pass through the nip (directly or after passage over the periphery of one) of gear wheels 17, 19, rotating at a speed such that the filament speed between them is less than the surface speed of the draw rolls, and are wound with (added) twist on a ring spindle package 21. The crimped filaments may be treated e.g. false-twisted by frictional contact with a flange on one end of a drum as described in Specification 890,053, to "dephase" the crimp. The wheels 17,19, are maintained at a uniform temperature e.g. by a blast of air directed upwardly into the meshing area or solely against one wheel. The crimp frequency may be adjusted by altering the number of teeth per inch in the wheels; the amplitude may be altered by increasing or decreasing the meshing engagement of the teeth; the teeth may be irregularly spaced and/or meshed; one or both wheels are driven. Filaments emerging from the wheels may be cooled e.g. by a (or the) blast of air to assist crimp setting.
