Abstract

1362665 Non-woven fabrics JOHNSON & JOHNSON 13 Dec 1971 57787/71 Heading D2B A non-woven fabric is made by wet-laying an aqueous slurry of 30-90% by weight of fibres having an average length of at least “ inch, and from 70-10% by wt. of fibres having an average length of at most 1/6 inch to form a sheet, bonding the sheet with an intermittent print pattern of discrete synthetic resin binder areas, and applying over-all a relatively soft, synthetic resin binder in an amount equal to 2-10% by weight of the finished fabric. The relatively long fibres may be cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or triacetate, polyamide, polyester, acrylic, modacrylic, polyolefin, spandex or fluorocarbon fibres. The relatively short fibres may be made of vegetable fibres such as cotton linters, wood pulp or rayon. Resin binder particles and deposition aids therefor may be added to the fibrous slurry before wet-laying. Specified resins include polymers and copolymers of vinyl ethers, vinyl halides, vinyl esters, acrylates and methacrylates, styrene, acrylonitrile and acrylamides, methacrylonitrile and methacrylamides, vinylide chloride, olefins; synthetic rubbers derived from conjugated dienes; chlorinated rubber, natural latex; polyurethanes, polyamides, and polyesters. The deposition aids may be alum, polyethylene imine, polymeric amines or amides, or cationic starch. The print pattern may be applied either to a dry or wet sheet. The binder applied intermittently and overall may be selected from the resins specified above, or may be viscose.
