294,138. Armstrong Cork Co., (Assignees of Humphreys, C. F., and McCarthy, J. C.). July 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Right to Patent relinquished. Special fabric bases; ornamenting.-Felt base floor-covering material is printed on its surface with a coloured pattern and then embossed so as to depress certain of the colours to bring the pattern into relief. A printed floor covering of this type imitating tiling may for example be indented in the parts representing the mortar joints between the tiles. Preferably the pattern is printed before embossing. Oil paints may be used as the felt base does not become hard during the drying of the paint. Preferably the material is warmed slightly before embossing so as to render the bituminous composition with which the felt is saturated more plastic. The embossing may be effected before printing, particularly when shallow depressions only or formed, or when printing apparatus is used which could lay paint in the depressions. Fig. 4 shows a felt base floor covering printed with a tile pattern comprising tiles 2, 3, 4 of three colours, or of various shades of the same colour, separated by mortar spaces 14. Some of the tiles may be provided with printed designs. The printed spaces representing the mortar are depressed as shown in Fig. 5, the depressions being about 1/32 to 3/64 of an inch deep, and preferably of a smooth contour.
