283,946. Armstrong Cork Co., (Assignees of Humphreys, C. F., and McCarthy, J. C.). Jan. 22, 1927, [Convention date]. Right to Patent relinquished. Single coatings; multiple superposed coatings; ornamenting.-Flexible hard surfaced linoleum or floor covering material is printed with a coloured pattern, and certain of the colours are thereafter bodily indented to bring the pattern into relief. The invention is particularly applicable to linoleum having a tile pattern, the parts representing the mortar being indented, and tiles of a limited number of colours occurring irregularly to simulate hand-laid tiling, as shown in Fig. 1. The printed spaces 13 which represent the mortar are depressed as shown in Fig. 5, forming grooves 14 about 1/32 to 3/64 of an inch deep and of rounded section. The indenting is preferably effected by means of an embossing plate. The pattern is preferably printed before the embossing. Preferably a quick-drying nitrocellulose paint or lacquer is used, and the linoleum is printed, embossed, and then cured. In the printing of felt base floor coverings, the printing may be carried out either before or after embossing.
