Abstract

1,247,616. Coating. NAIRN-WILLIAMSON Ltd. 16 July, 1970 [31 July, 1969], No. 38532/69. Heading B2E. A flexible sheet material is provided with a relief coating by elastically deforming the material, applying a layer of a resinous composition, e.g. a foamable vinyl plastisol, to the deformed surface, allowing the deformed surface to recover so that the coating develops a corresponding relief and then setting the coating. The flexible material may be felted cellulose or mineral fibres impregnated with butadiene/styrene copolymers, neoprene or polyvinyl acetate or may be a woven or needled fabric of cotton, jute or asbestos. A sizing composition may be applied to the material. The resinous composition may contain pigments, blowing agents and stabilizers. A decorative pattern may be printed on the surface, e.g. by rotogravure techniques. A transparent wear layer, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride may also be applied. In an embodiment, asbestos felt is passed through the nip of a roller 2 and engraved rubber back up roller 3. Foamable vinyl plastisol 5 is fed into the nip and the asbestos foam is forced into the grooves. On leaving the nip the felt recovers its shape and forms the relief in the coating.
