Abstract

1,133,331. Discontinuous coatings. STAFLEX INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 27 Oct., 1965 [28 July, 1964], No. 30011/64. Heading B2E. Fusible interlining material for use in garment manufacture is prepared by applying to a flexible substrate spaced deposits of an aqueous dispersion of a heat sensitive bonding agent, such dispersion having a viscosity such that when deposited on a surface in the form of dots in the range of 0.01-0.20" diameter retain a height of 0.002-0.02" and then drying said deposit to consolidate the heat sensitive bonding agent and thus leave a coating of spaced deposits of heat sensitive bonding agent heated to the surface of said substrate, the heat sensitive bonding agent in the dried-spaced deposite softening and becoming adhesive at a temperature of 80‹-170‹C. The dispersion may be rendered] viscous by addition to the solution of a water soluble thickening agent. The spaced deposits may be applied by causing the dispersion to flow through the apertures of a screen onto a web of the substrate or by the use of gravure rollers or other painting devices. Alternatively deposits may be painted on an intermediate carrier roll, belt or web and then transferred onto the substrate. A bonding agent may be a synthetic resin derived from a vinyl acetate, polymers and copolymers of vinyichloride, vinyl acetals, vinylidene chloride, acrylic esters, styrene, butadiene, olefines and polymers such as polyamides and polyesters. Specified are copolymers of styrene and butadiene, styrene and acrylonitrile, ethylene and vinyl acetate, neoprene, butyl rubber, urethane rubbers and natural rubbers. Modifying resins may be incorporated such as resins, modified resins, alkyds and modified alkyds, phenylformaldehyde resins and natural resins such copals and dammars, plasticisers such as dibutylphthalate, phosphate plasticisers and polymeric plasticisers may be used, a water-soluble thickening agent may be used for example sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate, polyvinylalcohol. Water-soluble thickness such as colloidal kaolins may be also be present. The deposits may be flattened by lightly calendering before or immediately after drying.
