Abstract

1447837 Adhesive tapes NITTO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 21 Aug 1974 [27 Aug 1973] 36682/74 Heading B2E A pressure sensitive adhesive tape comprises a backing layer stretched transversely and having as a main component polypropylene or a polypropylene-ethylene copolymer containing less than 15% by wt. ethylene, coated with an adhesive, the backing layer having the following properties (1) shock edge tear resistance (J.LS.Z1523)-below 200 g, (2) longitudinal elongation at break-above 200%, (3) longitudinal tensile strength-above 170 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>, (4) transverse tensile strength-above 800 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>, (5) longitudinal impact strength (defined)- above 15 kg cm/mm, and (6) a thickness of 10-300 microns. Suitable bases may be made of (1) polypropylene having above 80% isotacticity, (2) propylene/ethylene copolymers with <15% ethylene, or (3) a blend of (1) or (2) with less than 40 wt % of polyethylene. The polyethylene may be wholely or partly substituted by ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer, polyisobutylene, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer or a mixture thereof. The base is preferably treated by corona discharge or dichromate on both sides before applying the adhesive, optionally after a primer, to one side and a release coating to the other. Release coatings mentioned are silicone resin and the reaction product of N-octadecylisocyanate and soluble starch applied as a solution. A suitable primer is a solution of chlorobutadiene rubber and phenol-formaldehyde resin. Suitable adhesives are applied from solution or dispersion and may comprise natural or synthetic rubber, or synthetic resin.
