Abstract
A flexible material comprising a flexible web support carrying at least two flexible layers is produced by feeding an aqueous organic colloid coating composition and a polymeric hydrosol coating composition as layers in superposed relation into a coating bead in contact with one surface of the web and moving the web continuously past the bead, the surface tension of the composition forming the upper layer being lower than that of the composition forming the lower layer. The aqueous organic colloid coating composition may be cecellulose ester solution e.g. hydrolysed cellulose acetate propionate, or a gelatino-silver halide emulsion. The gelatino-silver halide emulsion layer may form the upper or lower layer. The polymeric hydrosol coating composition may be prepared from acrylic polymers e.g. polyethyl acrylate; polyvinyl esters e.g. polyvinyl acetate; copolymers e.g. of vinyl acetate and vinyl isobutyrate or methyl methacrylate; and terpolymers e.g. n-butylacrylate-styrene-methacrylamide. The polymeric hydrosol may coalesce on loss of water to form a water resistant layer. The polymeric hydrosol may contain a pigment e.g. titanium dioxide. The support may be water absorbent and may be of paper or a film support e.g. cellulose acetate coated with coatings may be set by chilling, or if, when employing water-impermeable supports, the water resistant layer is coated over the silver halide emulsion layer by heating only. A method of coating compositions of aqueous organic colloid dispersions comprises applying simultaneously a plurality of aqueous dispersions as layers to a support wherein one of the dispersions is a polymeric hydrosol and the uppermost deposited dispersion has a lower surface tension than any of the layers below it.
