Abstract

912,534. Impregnating permeable materials; flocked fabrics. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Dec. 16, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957], No. 40521/58. Class 140. Material, which becomes stiff and resilient on addition and subsequent evaporation of an activating solvent and may be used for making shoe stiffeners, comprises a fibrous base, e.g. a soft paper of felted cellulose fibres impregnated with rubber latex, coated on one or both sides with flock, e.g. of viscose fibres, and impregnated with a stiffening composition in discontinuous form. The stiffening composition may comprise nitrocellulose, for which acetone is used as the activating solvent, polystyrene, activated by toluol, or polyvinyl butyrol. As shown, a moving fibrous web 10 is coated with a curable rubber adhesive from a hopper 14 and then with flock fibres 12 from a hopper 28 vibrated by a hexagonal beater bar 30. The web is then passed through a curing oven 32 after which the process may be repeated to flock-coat the other side. The singly or doubly coated web is drawn by rollers 36 through a bath 34 containing an acetone solution of nitrocellulose and through a precipitating bath 38 of water, is dried in a chamber 40, and rolled up at 42. The bath 34 may be replaced by a bath of polystyrene latex furnished with a doctor blade, the bath 38 being dispensed with.
