Abstract

824,314. Paper containing synthetic polymers; pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes. DUNLAP, I. R. May 25, 1956 [May 25, 1955], No. 16303/56. Classes 96 and 140. A fibrous web is obtained by forming an aqueous slurry of fibres, incorporating therein an elastomeric polymer, precipitating the polymer on to the fibres, forming a bonded web and then incorporating a resinous polymer incompatible with the elastomer. The elastomer can be added as an aqueous latex, and specified elastomers are those of or from butadieneacrylonitrile or -styrene, natural and butyl rubber, polychloroprene, vinyl chlorides and alkyl acrylates. Precipitant specified is a water-soluble polymer having at least three functional groups capable of substantial ionization in water. The resinous polymer is that of an aldehyde with either urea, melamine, phenol or mixtures thereof. Preferred amounts per 100 parts of fibre are 10-100 parts elastomer and ¢-5 parts of resinous polymer. To form a pressure-sensitive sheet or tape the web is coated on at least one side with an adhesive. Specification 723,901 is referred to.
