Abstract

920,116. Pressure sensitive adhesive tapes. G. B. W. BADSEY, and J. D. M. WHITE. May 5, 1960 [Feb. 6, 1959], No. 4317/59. Class 140. A normally tacky and pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet or tape comprises a paper backing internally bonded by a regenerated cellulose bonding material which may be formed in situ and bearing a " low tack " adhesive defined as requiring a force of less than 250 gm/inch width of tape to remove the tape from a surface to which it has been applied. The regenerated cellulose bonding material may be viscose and the amount of bonding material incorporated in the backing may be from 1 to 10% by weight based on the weight of the fibres of the backing. The fibres of the backing may have an average length of at least 3 mm. and may be of manilla having an average length of 5 to 12 mm. of sisal, or synthetic materials of a filamentary nature. The backing prior to impregnation may weigh less than 40 gm. per square metre. The tensile strength of the backing in the machine direction may be greater than e.g. at least 3.5 times greater than, the tensile strength in the cross-machine direction. The adhesive may be applied to both sides of the backing, or a thin plastic or backsize film e.g. of polythene, polyvinyl chloride or cellulose ester such as cellulose acetate may be extruded or deposited from an emulsion on to that side of the backing not intended to carry the adhesive. The bonded paper may be impregnated e.g . with a mixture of butadiene-sytrene, butadieneacrylonitrile and perhaps Novolak resorcinol resin, prior to coating with the adhesive. The adhesive may contain natural rubber, and polyterpene resin.
