Abstract

1436481 Abrasive tools AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 8 May 1974 [14 May 1973] 20364/74 Heading B3D [Also in Division B5] A lens surfacing pad comprises a laminate of a film material 16, one face of which is bonded to a sheet 14 offoraminous material and the other face of which is bonded to a layer 18 of pressuresensitive adhesive for detachably securing the pad to a lens surfacing tool 12, the film having sufficient abrasion and puncture resistance to prevent the adhesive from penetrating on to the sheet of foraminous material when the pad is employed in a lens surfacing operation. The sheet of foraminous material may be of woven fibres, e.g. a sheet of woven wire or woven synthetic fibres or a perforated sheet of metal or plastics, exemplified materials being of soft steel wire and perforated aluminium foil. The film, which may be applied to the sheet by heat pressure may be formed of an isomer based on ethylene. The pressure-sensitive adhesive layer may be in the form of a double-faced pressuresensitive adhesive tape and is preferably protected prior to use of the pad by a strip-off covering 20, e.g. of paper or plastics film. The tool may be used in surfacing a convex or concave lens.
