An adhesive tape comprises a coating 16, Fig. 2, of pressure-sensitive adhesive on one surface of a flexible backing 14 having longitudinal reinforcing strands 18 which are embedded in a coating 20 of yieldable bonding material on the other surface of the backing. The strands are each capable of slight independent longitudinal movement to distribute tensile forces applied to the tape. A release coating may be applied to the bonding coating. The strands and backing may be of contrasting colour. The strands may be secured to the backing by a relatively thin bonding coat so as to protrude out of the coat, Fig. 3, not shown. The backing may be of specified cellulose esters and ethers, polymers and copolymers of polyvinylidene chloride or of vinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyfluoroethylenes, polyvinyl alcohol, superpolyamides, polystyrenes, regenerated cellulose, gelatin, flexible glass, acrylates, methacrylates, rubber and its derivatives, starch, urea aldehyde, polyvinyl acetal or butyral and metal foils. Alternatively they may be woven or non-woven fibrous backings such as of exemplified synthetic or natural fibres or mineral fibres. The preferred strands are of glass, e.g. of glass yarn but synthetic filaments or natural threads, as exemplified, or wire may be used. The bonding coat is a different material from the backing and is preferably based on a rubber or elastomer, examples being given. Examples of adhesive coatings are also given.
