Abstract

723,901. Sizing paper pulp &c. INDUSTRIAL TAPE CORPORATION. Feb. 8, 1952 [Feb. 9, 1951], No. 3444/52. Addition to 723,869. Class 96. Natural or deproteinized rubber latex, or rubber-like polymers, e.g. vinyl, butyl, acrylic, or copolymers, butadiene-styrene or -acrylonitrile, Neoprene, polysulphide rubber, polyethylene, polystyrene or polytetrafluorethylene &c., e.g. with rosin, shellac, wax, alkyd resins or natural gums, of particle size less than 5 microns, are precipitated on to the fibres of paper pulp by adding 1 to 2000 parts per 1,000,000 of a cationic, water-soluble, N-basic organic polymer salt, e.g. a polymerized primary, secondary or tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium salt having groups which ionize in water with charges opposite to those on the size dispersion which is thereby precipitated, and the sized pulp is formed into paper or fibreboard &c. The N-basic polymer may be a polymerized aldehyde reaction product of guanidine carbonate, a polyethylene imine salt, or the reaction product of a vinyl pyridine polymer with an alkyl halide, e.g. butyl bromide &c.
