Abstract

A supple sheet material suitable for the manufacture of artificial leather comprises a non-woven densified web which comprises substantially hydrophilic fibres and a polymeric filler which has substantially no adhesion to the fibres and is homogeneously distributed throughout the web and coheres substantially via the spaces between the fibres, wherein the sheet material has a density of at least 0.5 g/cc. and a polymeric filler content of not more than 30% by weight of the sheet material. Hydrophilic fibres are considered to be fibres which when placed in a moist atmosphere at 20 C whose relative humidity changes from 50% to 95% will show a moisture pick-up of at least 7% of their own weight. The hydrophilic fibres may be polyvinyl alcohol, which may be water shrinkable and crimped or regenerated cellulose or mixtures thereof. The non-woven fibrous web may contain up to 5% of non-hydrophilic fibres such as nylon, polyester or polypropylene. The polymeric filler is preferably polyurethane or a nitrile rubber. The unfilled fibrous web may contain a binder such as a rubber latex, an isocyanate, an acrylate rubber, an alginate or a carboxy methylcellulose to temporarily maintain the high fibre density which may be applied to the web as a suspension or dispersion, and which may be removed in subsequent treatment. In a preferred embodiment, the binder is 5 to 10% and the polymeric filler is 10 to 20% by weight of the sheet material. The formed non-woven web may be needle punched followed by a shrinking treatment during which the binder may be added. The dried web is pressed at an elevated temperature of at least 120 to produce a web of density of at least 0.5 g/cc. The filler may be applied as a solution followed by its precipitation by a non solvent or by cooling. Further conventional leather processing may be effected on the supple sheet produced as may finishing applicable to synthetic leather.
