Abstract

1,216,812. Bonded wood fibres. CONWED CORP. 20 Feb., 1969 [21 Feb., 1968], No. 9320/69. Heading D1R. A web of felted cellulose-containing fibres wherein 10-100% of the fibres are chemically pulped wood fibres has a greatly enhanced resiliency when bonded by a resin binder composition of which at least one component is a celluose reactive cross-linking reagent crosslinked with the cellulose of the fibres and with at least one other corn ponent of the binder. The remainder of the fibres of the web, if any, may be cotton fibres. Examples of binders are those consisting of an urea-formaldehyde resin and a vinyl acetate polymer or a methylated methylol melamine and a vinyl acrylic oopolymer. The preferred binding agent consists of an imidazole resin and a vinyl-acrylic copolymer. Other examples are dimethylol ethyl carbamate with one of a number of latices such as a vinyl-acrylic copolymer, a vinyl acetate polymer, a styrene-butadiene copolymer or mixtures thereof. The web is formed by supplying on air suspension 64 of short wood fibres and if desired longer cotton fibres, from a duct 54 to a chamber 50 positioned over a moving belt 52. Nozzles 66 spray the liquid binder particles onto the fibres before they fall onto the belt 52 where they form a mat which is conveyed under compression rollers 72 to a dryer mechanism 74.
