Abstract

867,545. Agglutinated fibrous materials. ROHM & HAAS CO. Aug. 12, 1957 [Aug. 13, 1956], No. 25443/57. Class 140. In a non-woven fibrous product the fibres are distributed at least partly in random array and are substantially entirely comprised of non- proteinaceous fibres which are incapable of felting and the fibres are bonded together by a binder consisting, or containing a significant amount, of an addition polymer containing epoxy groups and which has been cross-linked to an insoluble and infusible condition by a chemical reaction involving the epoxy groups and resulting in opening of the oxisane rings and wherein said polymer, before cross-linking, is a water-insoluble linear addition polymer of monoethylenically unsaturated monomer molecules and which contains at least 3% by weight of polymerized epoxy monomer consisting of at least one glycidyl ether of an unsaturated alcohol and/or glycidyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid. The binder may be prepared by emulsion polymerization of the monomers defined above either alone or together with other monoethylenically unsaturated comonomers. Specified comonomers include various acrylates and methacrylates, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylamide and methacrylamide. Fibrous mats may be formed by carding or air deposition. Natural or synthetic fibres may be used. The binder may be applied as a powder or as an aqueous dispersion to the dry fibres before formation of the mat so as to penetrate partially or completely through the interior of the fibrous product. Alternatively, it may be sprayed on to the fibres as they fall through a settling chamber or it may be printed on to a carded web in a design consisting of a plurality of spaced rings. The binder hereinbefore defined may be applied in conjunction with other binders or with the use of potentially adhesive fibres within the fibrous product. Sheet material according to the invention may be used as interlayers or backing sheets in conjunction with plastic films or textile fabrics to form laminates. Specified fibres are viscose, nylon, cellulose acetate, polyacrylonitrile, glass, cotton, jute, sisal, ramie, hemp, polyvinyl chloride; copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or acrylonitrile; copolymers of acrylonitrile with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, methacrylonitrile or vinyl pyridine; polyesters such as ethylene glycol terephthalate polymers. Specifications 595,447 and 853,619 are referred to.
