Abstract
1,141,991. Polymerization on fibrous materials. MOSCOVSKY TEKSTILNY INSTITUT. 18 Jan., 1966, No. 2367/66. Heading C3G. [Also in Division D1] A bonded fabric is produced by incorporating a monomer into a fabric, polymerizing the monomer and subsequently heating and pressing the fabric so that the fibres in the fabric are bonded together only by the said polymerized monomer and only at their points of intersection. The fabric is formed from fibres of e.g. cotton, wool, flax, collagen, polyamide, polyester, viscose or cellulose acetate. Specified monomers are vinyl acetate and styrene. In the examples, (1 a mat of polyamide fibres is subjected to Co<SP>60</SP>-gamma radiation in contact with styrene vapour and (2) a mat of cotton is immersed in a styrene/methanol solution and irradiated as in (1).
