Abstract

A plastic foam material provided with a slidable surface is formed by coating the irregularities or projections on the surface at the cut end of the material with a coating agent which provides the projections with smoothness and stiffness while retaining their resilience, the coating material being then dried. The foam material may be of ester-or ether-polyurethane, polyester, polyamide, vinyls such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, Vinylon (Trade Mark), viscose and rubber. The coating agent may be a silicone resin or oil, an oil or wax of the paraffin series, or a mixture of a synthetic resin and a silicone material e.g. a grease agent, solution or emulsion, or a paste of starch, processed starch, casein, dextrin or animal glue, a cellulose derivative e.g. methyl or carboxymethyl cellulose, vinyl, acrylic or other synthetic resin e.g. vinyl acetate-vinyl alcohol copolymer, alkoxylized nylon e.g. N-methoxymethylized nylon, polyvinyl acetate, partially-saponified polyvinyl acetate, melamineformaldehyde, which forms the slidable surface. The coating agent may contain a static eliminator. The agent may be applied by spraying, endless belt, or reverse rolls. The coating may be applied on both sides of the foam. The coated foam material may be laminated by means of a binding agent or by a thermosetting joint process to knitted, woven or unwoven cloth, synthetic resin sheets, leather or imitation leather, or a laminate of foam and cloth e.g. knitted nylon cloth, may be coated.
