Abstract

Articles or sheet material, having pile surfaces are formed by pressing the article against a surface having cavities so shaped that the material entering them is formed into a stem having an enlarged free end. The article is then removed from the surface so that the enlarged free ends jam in the cavities and each stem is stretched and thus molecularly oriented. The enlarged free ends may be retained upon the pile or may be removed. The surface may be a wire gauze, a belt of sintered material, or a belt having punched cavities, the article being pressed there against by passage between rollers (see Figures 3 and 4 not shown). The articles may comprise a laminated sheet having a substrate of paper or woven or non-woven fabric and a surface layer, which may be foamed, of partially regenerated cellulose acetate, polyvinyl chloride, incompletely vulcanised rubber, or incompletely-cured thermosetting resin. Two sheets made by the above process may be stuck together pile surface to pile surface, smooth surface to smooth surface, or smooth surface to pile surface. In one embodiment plastic material is sprayed onto a forming surface and the resultant sheet is backed with e.g. a textile layer whilst pressing it into the forming surface, the composite subsequently being stripped from the forming surface. The pile formed may be flattened to some extent, usually by a roller, whilst it is still deformable, to make some pile projections adhere. This gives the product the appearance of a non-woven fabric.
