Abstract

815,914. Moulding thermoplastic synthetic resin. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 14, 1956 [Feb. 17, 1956], No. 4957/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VIII and IX] Flexible car mats and similar articles are continuously formed by extruding, as through a fish-tailed shaped die 2, a flat strip 3 of thermoplastic material and feeding it through cooled rollers 4, which impress a pattern on at least one surface thereof and which contact the strip substantially only at the nip, and cutting the strip into separate articles, e.g. on a cutting table 7. The thermoplastic material may comprise plasticized polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, or copolymer of vinyl chloride with another compound, e.g. vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, or a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile. Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) illustrate patterns impressed by the rollers 4 in the manufacture of cash and pedestal mats, respectively. The rollers 4 may be treated either continuously or intermittently with a lubricant, e.g. a paste containing a polysiloxane oil, to prevent sticking of the plastic material thereto. A flexible fabric backing may be applied to the extruded plastic sheet by passing into the rollers 4 a sheet of textile material such as canvas or hessian beneath the plastic sheet.
