Abstract

756,383. Making marbled sheet material; rubber and fibrous compositions. SEMTEX, Ltd. Sept 29, 1954 [Dec. 19, 1953], No. 35392/53. Classes 70 and 87(2) [Also in Group VIII] Marlled sheet material is produced by a method in which a net composed of a thermoplastic material or vulcanizable rubber composition is superimposed upon a base sheet of a different colour but also composed of a thermoplastic material or vulcanizable rubber composition respectively, and the assembled base sheet and net are submitted, while in a plastic condition, to a calendering operation in which the net is spread and rolled into the surface of the base sheet at a mixing nip formed by two rolls of the calender. The net may be produced by cutting or perforating a sheet of thermoplastic material or.vulcanizable rubber composition and stretching it. As shown, the net 11 is fed on to the top of the base sheet 12 just as it passes into the nip formed by the two upper rolls 13 and 14 of a three-roll calender (Fig. 1). The net is spread and rolled into the base sheet at the mixing nip formed by the two lower rollers 14 and 15. The marlled sheet leaves the calender as at 16. Fig. 2 shows a sheet of marlling material, having slits cut into it, being streched out in a net form. In a modification, a plurality of nets of different colours may be fed into the nip of the calender on top of the base sheet simultaneously; or they may be fed in without the base sheet, in which latter case a multicoloured marlling sheet is formed which is itself thus slit and formed into a net and applied to a base sheet. By using a four-roll calender it is possible to manufacture the base sheeting and to introduce the net at virtually the same time. Specified thermoplastic materials are polyvinyl resins, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with other vinyl compounds. The vulcanizable rubber compositions to which the method can be applied comprise compositions based on natural rubber or synthetic rubbers. Examples describe a thermoplastic composition comprising polyvinyl chloride, tricresyl phosphate, asbestos fibre, dried carbonate, dried stearate, gelled castor oil pigment and whiting; and a vulcanizable rubber composition comprising natural rubber, high styrenebutadiene rubber, asbestos fibre, whiting. zinc oxide, stearic acid, wax, sulphur and pigment.
