Abstract
1,237,164. Synthetic polymer papers. MITSUBISHI RAYON CO. Ltd. 14 April, 1969 [27 April, 1968], No. 18883/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions B6 and C3] A polymer paper, i.e. a sheet or film of paper quality with a synthetic resin base, having good opacity and good writing and printing adaptability, comprises 100 parts by weight of a thermoplastic resin, 1 to 20 parts by weight of at least one white pigment of higher refractive index than the resin and having particle sizes of 0À01 to 2 microns, and 5 to 50 parts by weight of at least one filler material of similar refractive index to the resin and having particle sizes of 1 to 40 microns, the white pigment and filler being insoluble in the molten resin and uniformly distributed therein. The thermoplastic resin is preferably isotactic polypropylene, high impact polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride or methyl methacrylate-methyl acrylate copolymer. The white pigment is an achromatic inorganic pigment, e.g. titanium oxide, zinc oxide, white lead or white bismuth, which contributes to opacity. The filler material is an achromatic inorganic pigment, e.g. clay, calcium carbonate, calcium silicate, diatomaceous earth or talc, which contributes to texture and ink-receptivity. The mixture is melted and formed into a film by conventional blown tubular extrusion or calendering methods. The quality of the polymer paper may be improved by surface treatments, e.g. corona electric discharge or immersion in an organic or inorganic solvent (to improve inkreceptivity), electron beam irradiation (to stiffen the paper), or coating with clay (to improve the appearance).
