[Class 140] A composite elastic material is made by applying to an elastic textile fabric formed of covered elastomer threads a thin, continuous film of a thermoplastic elastomer which is not self-sustaining and is supported on a temporary backing from which it is transferred to the fabric by applying heat and pressure to bond the film only to the superficial raised portions of the yarns. The film may be bonded to the fabric while the fabric is in a stretched condition. The threads may be of rubber or an organic plastic material having the same elastic properties, covered with textile material, and formed into a woven fabric, or a knitted fabric wherein the elastic threads form the loops in the fabric, or lie straight and run through the loops. The woven or knitted fabric may contain some non-elastic threads. The film, which may be less than 0.002 inch thick, may be of natural rubber, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl butyral resin, polyisobutylene, polyisobutene, polychloroprene, or butadiene polymerized by itself or with isobutylene, acrylonitrile, or styrene. The temporary backing may be a drum, band or sheet material having a smooth surface to which the transfer film has no permanent adhesion. It may be formed of or coated with a hydrophilic material such as regenerated cellulose, alkalisoluble, water-insoluble cellulose ether, gelatine, casein, zein, or deacetylated chitin, or with thermoplastic material or thermosetting resin. The film may be applied to the backing as a solution or molten mass by spraying, dipping or calendering. As shown, two backing sheets 10 each carrying a thermoplastic elastic transfer film are fed between rolls 13 so as to contact the film with a web 12 of elastic fabric from a roll 9. The assembled layers are passed around a heated drum 14 against which they are pressed by means of a tensioned travelling blanket 15, and the backing sheets are stripped from the film-coated fabric at 20. Stripping may be facilitated by cooling the united layers, e.g. in a cooling-chamber 18. The material is suitable for water-proof covers and clothing, shoe material, hospital sheeting, beach bags, balloon and parachute material.
