Abstract

1,200,446. Crease proofing cellulosic materials. ENGLISH SEWING Ltd. 23 Nov., 1967 [26 Aug., 1966], No. 38355/66. Heading D1P. Textile material containing at least 50% by weight of natural or regenerated cellulose fibres, e.g. cotton, linen, viscose rayon or polynosics, is crease proofed by impregnating it with an aqueous mixture capable of forming a nitrogen containing resin together with a catalyst which under the conditions of treatment liberates an acid e.g. magnesium dihydrogen phosphate, zinc nitrate, or ammonium chloride or dihydrogen phosphate which may be used in admixture with formaldehyde, drying it so that it contains 4-25% by weight of moisture calculated on the dry weight of the material, allowing it to stand under such conditions that it retains moisture between the limits of 4-25% by weight calculated on the dry weight of the material and so that resin formation takes place, and then drying it. The nitrogen-containing resin is a polymeric thermo-hardening resin, e.g. a reaction product of formaldehyde with urea or melamine, or a reactive resin which reacts chemically with the treated cellulose to form direct links or cross links, e.g. a methylol derivative of cyclic ethylene urea, cyclic propylene urea, cyclic dihydroxy ethylene urea, a triazone, a cyclic urea or a carbamate. After adjusting the impregnated material to the desired moisture content it may be rolled or plaited and placed in an air tight container, e.g. a polyvinyl-polyvinylidene chloride/aluminium laminated sheeting, for 1-48 hours and maintained at a temperature of more than 10‹C, e.g. 20‹-60‹C., or for 1 minute at a temperature of above 100‹C. The treated material may be washed to remove unreacted reagents and catalyst residues. Fabrics may be pleated or creased and garments made up whilst they are in the moist state before the resin is formed.
