Abstract

873,700. Paper containing synthetic fibres &c. PORTALS Ltd., and WILLIAMS, H. M. G. July 9, 1959 [July 24, 1958], No. 23917/58. Class 96. In the production of paper of high wet strength, from synthetic fibres, e.g. of nylon, which may also include cellulosic fibres, e.g. of wood pulp, an alcohol-soluble methyl alkoxy (preferably methoxy) derivative of nylon, e.g. N-alkoxy methyl hexamethylene adipamide is incorporated as a binder during or after web formation and the paper is subsequently treated with one or more cross-linking agents, e.g. formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, a di-, or a tri-basic acid, e.g. oxalic acid, or urea, or thiourea. A catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid may assist in cross-linking the molecules of the binder. Other synthetic fibres may be polyester, or polyacrylic. Specifications 820,785 and 820,786 are referred to.
