Abstract

Paper containing a proportion of man-made fibres is made by forming an aqueous suspension which contains the man-made fibres and an amineformaldehyde precondensate, forming a web from the suspension, drying it, impregnating the dried web with an aqueous alcoholic solution containing a linear copolyamide of high molecular weight and a polyacrylic acid ester of high molecular weight and drying the impreganted sheet. The fibres may be of polyhexamethyleneadipamide and may be mixed with natural cellulose fibres. The precondensate may be a cation-active trimethylolmelamine. The suspension may also contain a salt of a polyvalent metal, e.g. aluminium sulphate. The impregnating solution may also contain a cross-linking agent such as a diethyleneurea derivative or a formaldehyde donor, and/or a hydrophobising agent such as octadecylethyleneurea. The impregnated web may also be hot-calendered, die-stamped, creped or embossed. The product is ink-fast, has a high wet-strength, is stable to dilute acids, alkalis and heat, and may be porous. Specifications 797,943, 948,749 and German Specification 902,967 are referred to.
