Abstract
Cationic melamine-formaldehyde resins containing sulphonate groups are prepared by acidifying to a pH of 0,5-3,5 a solution or dispersion of a melamine formaldehyde resin containing sulphonate groups and ageing solution for at least one hour. The resin is a condensation product of 1 mol of melamine with 2:5-4,5 mols of formaldehyde, having present in the molecule up to 0,2 mol of sulphonate groups per mol of melamine and having a viscosity of at least 300 centipoises when measured in a 55% aqueous solution at 25 DEG C. The sulphonate groups are introduced by including a water soluble salt of sulphurous acid, such as ammonium, potassium or sodium bisulphite, sodium sulphite or sodium metabisulphite, in the melamine-formaldehyde reaction mixture. For conversion of the resin to the cationic state strong acids are used such as phosphoric acid, formic acid and preferably hydrochloric acid. The products are useful for the preparation of high wet strength papers.
