Abstract

1281014 Paper and board; bonded-fibre fabrics ROHM GmbH 21 July 1969 [27 July 1968] 36595/69 Headings D1R and D2B A fibrous sheet material (e.g. paper, paperboard, cardboard, pasteboard or non-woven fabric) containing a water-soluble compound containing a polyvalant cation is impregnated with an anionic dispersion of a synthetic resin comprising a polyacrylate or polymethacrylate, and then dried. The polymer may also contain units derived from methlolacrylamide, and the dispersion may also contain a wetting agent or a thickening agent, e.g. an aminoplast. The polyvalent cation may be that of a polyvalent metal, e.g. Mg, Ca, Al, Zn, Cr or Fe supplied as a salt of an organic or inorganic acid, or an organic compound containing two or more quaternary ammonium groups, e.g. poly(methacryloxyethyl-trimethyl-ammonium chloride). In the Examples, sheets of paper are impregnated first with an aqueous solution of the cationic material, then with the anionic dispersion, but reference is also made to the addition of the cationic material to papermaking pulp in the Hollander.
