Abstract

815,410. Paper containing mineral filler &c. ROHM & HAAS CO. April 5, 1957 [April 10, 1956], No. 11146/57. Class 96. In making mineral-filled paper, there is added to the pulp suspension 0.01 to 1.0 per cent based on the weight of the fibre of a watersoluble linear polymer, or a salt or a quaternary of such a polymer, of monoethylenically unsaturated molecules, the polymer having a molecular weight of at least 250,000 comprising 0 to 55 mol. per cent of its units having the formula where R is H or CH 3 , A is -(CH 2 ) 2 -, -(CH 2 ) 3 -, or -CH 2 CH(CH 3 )-, and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , and 45 to 100 per cent of its units of the formula where A, R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> have the same significance as before, and R‹ is #-hydroxy-ethyl or -propyl, or γ-hydroxypropyl and X is OH or a negative salt-forming atom or radical. The suspension may be at pH = 3 to 10 and may contain 0.01 to 0.5 per cent of cellulose fibres and 1 to 50 per cent of filler on the weight of the fibre. The water-soluble polymer may comprise at least 10 mol. per cent of #-(N,N-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate which may be quaternized by ethylene oxide. In an example, (1), to 1.0 per cent of kraft fibre and 20 per cent of clay was added 0.11 per cent (on fibre) of an ethylene oxide quaternary of the hydroacetate salt of a homopolymer of #-(N,N- dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate of molecular weight of several million (by viscosity indications), 90 to 95 per cent of the clay being retained in the formed web. Waxes and aliphatic ketene dimers may also be included. The pulp may be bleached or unbleached sulphite, kraft, soda, groundwood, rag, rope, or jute, &c., and may include alum and rosin.
