Abstract

883,973. Pigment-loaded paper. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Sept. 25, 1959 [Oct. 6, 1958], No. 32637/59. Class 96. Pigment-loaded paper, or cardboard &c. is made by distributing a hydrophilic pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide, clay, lead chromate, or calcium carbonate, in a paper pulp suspension and adding e.g. less than 0.1% on the weight of the fibres, of a linear vinyl polymer as a dilute aqueous solution, the polymer being non-cationic, of molecular weight of at least 5,000,000 and being predominantly of carbamyl alkylene linkages of not more than 4 carbon atoms. The polymer may include 1 to 15 mol. per cent of carboxy alkylene linkages. It may be added, e.g. 5 to 15 sees., before the pulp is sheeted. The fibres may carry a hydrous alumina floe. Rosin size and alum may be added before the polymer. The pH value of the pump may be 5 to 9.
