Abstract

1377717 Coating paper SCOTT PAPER CO 4 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 603/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Paper is cast-coated by applying to a paper web a coating composition as defined below, and conveying the coated paper web, without gelling or floculating the coating, into a casting nip containing a pool of boiling water. The coating composition is an aqueous mixture of at least two polymer latices, of which at least one (forming the major proportion) is not alkali-soluble or swellable and at least one (forming the minor proportion) is alkali-soluble or swellable, the composition having a pH such that the alkali-soluble or swellable latex remains undissolved or unswelled. A wide variety of suitable latices is specified, and exemplified compositions also contain clay, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, in some cases polyethylene as a lubricant, and in one case succinic anhydride as a buffer.
